Regular people are starting to trade like institutional traders - and they're making a living doing it. But not everyone is successful with their trades. There is a right way and a wrong way. I'm here to help you come up with vetted trade ideas so you actually make money off your trading.

Resilient Trader
Resilient Trader is where smart traders come for vetted ideas.

Every week, we cut through the noise and surface opportunities that institutions are already eyeing, but with strategies tailored for retail traders. Today's setup? The company that runs checkout for millions of online stores fell 12.6% in two days because a new AI agent can now shop for you. The agent still has to buy from somebody.

We’ll cover:

  • Why Shopify is a Buy at $126.79 or better, 30% below its high and back where it sat before a 34% growth quarter

  • Why the market sold the toll booth on the day traffic went up

  • One defined-risk March call spread that pays through the holiday print

🔍 Trade Thesis: The Agents Are Coming, and They Check Out Through Shopify

On Tuesday, Meta launched Muse, a consumer AI agent that books travel, sends email and buys things. Meta rose 6.6% on Wednesday. Shopify fell 5.5%, on top of a 7.6% drop the day before. The market's logic: if an AI does your shopping, who needs a storefront?

Here is what that logic skips. An agent that buys something needs a catalog, a price, an inventory count, a checkout and a payment rail. $SHOP already built that layer for AI, and it is not a plan. It is live.

Behind the scenes:

🛒 Agentic Storefronts are already on by default. Since March 24, US Shopify merchants are discoverable and purchasable inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and the Gemini app. The agents the market is scared of are already customers.

📜 Shopify wrote the protocol. The Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Google, is the open standard for how agents transact with merchants; Shopify's release lists Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa behind it. When the rails are the standard, every new agent is a customer, not a competitor.

📈 The traffic is real and it converts. On the Q2 call, President Harley Finkelstein said AI-driven traffic and orders tripled year over year, new-buyer orders from AI channels arrive at nearly twice the rate of other channels, and Catalog-powered AI searches convert at twice the rate of searches built on scraped data.

💳 The take rate rides with the volume. Merchant Solutions revenue, the piece tied to payments, grew 37% to $2.78 billion in Q2, and Shopify Payments handles 68% of everything sold on the platform. An agent that checks out through Shopify pays Shopify.

🏦 The balance sheet is not the problem. $4.9 billion in cash and securities, $654 million of quarterly free cash flow, a $2 billion buyback.

The honest bear case: at 51 times forward earnings the growth has to continue, and Q3 gross profit was guided to grow slower than revenue because payments carry a lower margin than subscriptions. The real fear is that OpenAI or Google eventually demand a slice of every transaction their agents originate. That negotiation is years out, and it starts from Shopify holding the catalog and the checkout. We would rather own the toll booth at a 30% discount than bet against it. (Hedgeye calls Shopify a direct Muse beneficiary; Meta's launch list does not name it, and this trade does not need it to.)

📡 Market Sentiment & Fundamental Drivers

Sentiment is the setup. Shopify gapped up 17% on August 5 after printing 34% revenue growth, ran to $158.53 by mid-August, and has now given back the entire move. Nothing in the business changed in those five weeks; a narrative about AI agents did, and the company's own data contradicts it. RSI is 37 and the stock closed within a dollar of its low on 1.6 times average volume, which is how capitulation days usually look.

Underneath: GMV of $115.6 billion (+32%), international GMV +37%, Shop Pay growing 53%, and Q3 revenue guided to grow in the low thirties.

📐 Technical Analysis: A Full Round Trip Back to the Base

The chart is the bear case in one picture: SHOP is below every moving average after a two-day, 12.6% slide. We are buying weakness, and we say so plainly. What makes it buyable is what sits underneath: the August 3-4 base at $117-$123 that launched the earnings gap, and the July 23 low at $111.06 below that.

Moving Averages:

Below the 20-day at $147.18 by 13.9%

Below the 50-day at $134.75 by 5.9%

Below the 200-day at $131.18 by 3.3%

RSI 36.9, approaching oversold

🗝️ Key Levels:

🎯 Support: $123.30 (pre-earnings close), then $117 (August base), then $111.06

🎯 Resistance: $131 (200-day), $134.75 (50-day), then the $158.53 August high

🎯 Target: $172.67 analyst consensus, +36.2%

The setup: buy the gap fill at the base, stop under the base, and let a $30-wide call spread carry the upside through the holiday quarter. The first confirmation is a reclaim of the 200-day at $131, about 3% away.

🧠 SWOT & Who Should Take This Trade

Strengths: the commerce layer AI agents already use; 30%+ growth in GMV, revenue, gross profit and free cash flow; $4.9B of cash.

Weaknesses: 51x forward earnings; gross profit growing slower than revenue; beta of 2.64 while rates rise.

Opportunities: the first holiday season with Agentic Storefronts live; every new consumer agent is a new distribution channel.

Threats: platform owners demanding a cut of agent-originated sales; a selloff in high-multiple growth; no base on the chart yet.

Who should take it: growth investors who can hold a high-beta name through the Q4 print, and options traders who want defined risk on a 36% target gap. Not for anyone who needs the stock to stop falling this week.

💥 Trade of the Week: Buy SHOP Stock Plus One Defined-Risk Call Spread

Recommendation: Buy $SHOP ( ▼ 0.58% ) at $126.79 or better, and buy the March 19, 2027 $130/$160 call spread for a $10.55 net debit.

🛡️ Options Strategy - Bull Call Spread (Defined Risk)

  • Buy the Mar. 19, 2027 $130 Call at $20.75 (ask)

  • Sell the Mar. 19, 2027 $160 Call at $10.20 (bid)

  • Net debit: $10.55 per share, $1,055 per spread

  • Expiration: 191 days, after the Q4 holiday print expected in mid-February

Why March: Shopify has no February expiry, and January expires about four weeks before the Q4 report this trade is built for. March costs 50 cents more and buys the print. The chain agrees: implied volatility dips into January, steps up into March and falls again in April, the signature of a dated event in between.

How it works: you pay $1,055 for the next $30 of upside above $130. Below $130 at expiration you lose the debit and nothing more; above $160 you keep the full $1,945. We are not selling the $160 call because the upper strikes are rich (this chain is flat). We sell it because it drops the breakeven from $150.75 on a naked call to $140.55, and the spread beats the outright call at every price up to about $170.

(Quotes as of the Sep 9 close, 15-min delayed - verify with live brokerage prices. Mid-market on the spread was $9.95. The March chain is thinner than January; use limit orders.)

🛑 Risk Management Tip

On the shares, a close below $117 is the line. That is the base the stock launched from before the August print; if it goes, the market is saying the earnings beat did not matter, which breaks the thesis. The stop is 7.7% below entry and about one and a half average daily ranges away. On the spread there is nothing to manage: $1,055 is the maximum loss. Size so no single trade risks more than 1% to 2% of your account; this is a high-beta stock in a falling tape.

🚀 Catalysts to Watch

Keep your eyes on:

  1. Q3 2026 Earnings - Expected early November, the first full quarter with Agentic Storefronts live.

  2. Black Friday-Cyber Monday - Shopify publishes weekend sales the Tuesday after. Last year: $14.6 billion, up 27%. This is the first BFCM where the agents can buy.

  3. Q4 2026 Earnings - Expected mid-February, based on last year's February 11 date. The holiday quarter, the 2027 outlook, and the reason we own March.

  4. Reclaiming the 200-Day - $131, about 3% away. The first sign Wednesday was the low.

  5. New Agent Launches - Every consumer agent that ships with shopping is a new front door to a Shopify catalog.

🧠 Final Thoughts

$SHOP grew revenue 34%, tripled its AI-driven orders, and built the protocol the agents use to buy. Then the biggest consumer agent yet launched, and the stock lost 12.6% in two sessions because the market read the headline and not the plumbing.

We could be early. Good businesses at high multiples do not stop falling on schedule, and the chart has no base yet. That is why the stop sits under the August base and the options position is a defined-risk spread, not a naked call.

The question is simple. When an AI agent buys a pair of running shoes, does it route around Shopify or through it? The company's own numbers say through. The holiday quarter will settle it, and March options expire after the answer.
